The European Commission was represented in force in Sweden on Wednesday 23 May and will be again in Denmark on Thursday 24 May in international ministerial meetings to discuss global transition to clean energy.
Vice-President with responsibility for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič and Commissioners Miguel Arias Cañete (energy and climate) and Carlos Moedas (Research) took part on Wednesday in the third Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-3) in Malmö, co-hosted by Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, the European Commission and the Nordic Council of Ministers, which focused on accelerating clean energy innovation and boosting public research and development spending in the field of clean energy.
Cañete will travel on to Copenhagen to take part on Thursday in the ninth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9), co-hosted by the same players. The CEM is a forum that seeks to take forward the global transition to clean energy and to promote clean energy technologies by encouraging the exchange of best practice.
The countries taking part in these two conferences, which are also open to business leaders from the energy sector and high-level representatives from the world of finance, represent about 90% of global clean energy investment and 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
In the context of the CEM9, Cañete will open the annual Energy Infrastructure Forum which was set up by the Commission to remove technical and regulatory barriers to the free-flow of energy across the EU, and to discuss major issues relating to infrastructure and EU energy policy.
