23/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 22 May, European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said "substantial progress" was expected at the third round of technical level talks on the trade section of an updated EU-Chile association agreement. This third round of talks is to be held in Brussels from 28 May to 1 June. The talks were launched at the end of 2017 and aim to insert some updated elements into the EU-Chile association agreement that has been in force since 2005. These elements include investment, non-tariff barriers, intellectual property rights (including geographical indications) and arrangements on sustainable development (including gender equality and women's empowerment). The European Commission had spoken of satisfactory progress on most of the subjects during the second round of talks, in Santiago in January (see EUROPE 11956). (EH)
