Sefcovic urges Slovenia to become catalyst in sustainable energy at regional level

On a visit to Slovenia on Thursday 26 April, as part of his second Energy Union tour, the Vice-President of the European Commission with responsibility for Energy, Maros Sefcovic, urged Slovenia to continue its efforts for a sustainable energy transition and to become a catalyst in this field at regional level.

Slovenia has already achieved its 2020 targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is on track to achieve its target of a 25% share of renewable energies in its primary energy mix, “but there is still enormous potential to be tapped, for instance, in renewable energies or energy efficiency”, Sefcovic stressed.

Sefcovic, who was to meet the Slovenian Minister for Infrastructure, Peter Gašperšič, welcomed the national Slovenian energy concept as a model that can be used as a basis for the national energy and climate plans up to 2030.

He also welcomed the Slovene “spirit of innovation in cleaner technologies to create business opportunities and reduce strong dependence on imports of fossil fuels”.

In Ljubljana, Sefcovic was also to visit the European Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), meet members of parliament and civil society and attend a conference on clean mobility alongside Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc.  (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
