Still firmly opposed to refugee relocation, Bratislava promises to adopt a constructive attitude

13/04/2018 (Agence Europe)At a meeting with the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, on Thursday 12 April, the new prime minister of Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini, reiterated his opposition to compulsory quotas of asylum-seekers but said he was prepared to issue proposals for other forms of solidarity.  The new prime minister, who takes over from Robert Fico, forced to resign over the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak, says he will not let Slovakia be a country that always says no, and called for consensus on the refugee question rather than a group of countries "abusing" the majority voting system.  He also raised the question of the European budget, calling for the EU27 to not have over-rigid priorities because countries have different priorities.  Juncker said the two men had discussed developments since the Jan Kuciak case. (SP)
