New European radical left-wing movement launched ahead of elections of May 2019

13/04/2018 (Agence Europe)With just over a year until the European elections, the political parties La France insoumise, Podemos of Spain and Bloco of Portugal launched a European political movement in Lisbon on Thursday 12 April, signing the "Declaration of Lisbon for a citizens' revolution in Europe", opposing austerity and planning to terminate the European Treaties. They aim to create a new European organisation that is democratic and fair, for the sovereignty of the people. This European left-wing movement is not alone. In early March, Benoit Hamon, a candidate for the French presidential elections, and the former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, launched the “first transnational pan-European list” on an anti-austerity ticket for the 2019 European elections. The Party of the European Left, under the banner of the French Communist Party, is building up its 'progressive European forum', launched in Marseille in November. (PH)
