06/12/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 5 December, the EU called on Ukrainian authorities to strengthen the work of Ukraine's institutions against corruption. The calls comes at time when the General Prosecutor's Office in Ukraine seems to be on the warpath against the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). "Ukrainian authorities have to reinforce their efforts to ensure the independence, operational capacity and full effectiveness of the anti-corruption institutions. The work of these institutions must not be undermined but reinforced", a spokesperson for the European External Action Service stated, adding that the fight against corruption is "a key element in the development of EU-Ukraine relations, upon which the success of other reforms rests". According to the spokesperson, the public disclosure of a corruption investigation by the General Prosecutor's Office "significantly" weakens the capacity of NABU to effectively conduct investigations, and undermines public trust in an effective fight against corruption.
