On Tuesday 12 September, the European Parliament approved the composition of a special committee on terrorism that will consist of 30 MEPs. Its mandate will include identifying shortcomings in cross-border cooperation and proposing improvements. In a press release, Parliament indicated, “The committee will assess the extent of the terrorist threat on European soil and highlight any potential faults, deficiencies and malfunctions in counter-terrorism measures”.
The special committee’s mandate was approved on 6 July. The committee is to focus on: how external border management measures are implemented; deficiencies in sharing judicial, law enforcement and intelligence data among member states, the interoperability of European intelligence data bases, the impact of EU anti-terror laws on fundamental rights, radicalisation and the effectiveness of de-radicalisation programmes, money laundering and terrorism financing, including its links to organised crime.
The first meeting will take place on 14 September and will elect the chairperson of the committee. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
