On Friday 14 July, the European Commission concluded that the former Irish airport tax exemption scheme for transfer or transit passengers did not constitute state aid within the meaning of EU law.
Between 2009 and 2017, transfer or transit passengers through Irish airports were exempted from paying airport tax passed on through ticket prices. Passengers whose flights were leaving from an Irish airport, however, had to pay the tax.
