12/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – In Luxembourg on Friday 9 June, the majority of the home affairs ministers of the EU gave their support to the possibility of including preventative warnings in the Schengen Information System (SIS) regarding children at risk of abduction, as well as alerts regarding persons and objects for verification in the framework of investigations (see EUROPE 11799). According to a Council press release, however, they agreed to discuss the question of improving the use of the SIS in the field of legal cooperation at a later date. At the end of 2006, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, proposed creating new alerts in the SIS system, particularly for crimes related to terrorism. There was also a proposal to create preventative alerts for children at risk of abduction, to allow the national authorities to indicate children at particular risk. (SP)
