Opinion voted for at European Parliament excludes road sector from revision of directive on posted workers

On Thursday 11 May, MEPs at the internal market and consumer protection committee (IMCO) adopted an opinion (21 votes in favour, 14 against, 2 abstentions) in which they exclude the transport sector from the scope of the directive on posted workers, as part of the revision of this directive.

This result goes against the proposal by the rapporteur of the text, Danish Social Democrat Christel Schaldemose. She called for road transport to be included in the scope of the directive. This is contrary to the European Commission’s position, which would like a specific legislative act for this sector due, to the high-level of workers’ mobility in this field (see EUROPE 11738).

The IMCO committee also maintained the European Commission proposal to make national law applicable after a 24-month period, which is also contrary to the position of the rapporteur, which wanted to reduce this period to six months.

This is therefore a disappointment for Ms Schaldemose and her group, which compelled her to vote against her own text.

The report vote on the legislative text, co-authored by Elisabeth Morin-Chartier (EPP, France) and Agnes Jongerius (S&D, Netherlands) at the employment and social affairs committee (EMPL), is planned for the session on 12 and 13 July. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
