20/03/2017 (Agence Europe) – The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has identified the Mediterranean, “as one of the main climate change sensitive areas” at risk of suffering, “water shortages, the concentration of economic activities… and agriculture vulnerable to climate change”. According to a press release on 17 March, the UfM met up in Barcelona (14 and 15 March), with representatives from governments, the private sector, experts and civil society to assess the impact of this issue. The objective was to: draw up a “regional agenda” to assess country specific priorities. It asserted that, “the region is characterised by a rich and unique albeit fragile biodiversity”. Almost “10,000 to 12,000 marine species” are “under threat”, with a Mediterranean population concentrated in regions where, “carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) are four times higher than they were 50 years ago”.
