The European Commission adopted a proposal on Tuesday 14 March adjusting Regulation 2017/127 which sets fishing opportunities for certain stocks.
The Commission proposes to set a total allowable catch (TAC) of 486,115 tonnes for sandeel, with 458,552 tonnes going to Denmark. Sandeel is a short-lived species for which the scientific advice becomes available in the second half of February and the fishery opens in April. In Regulation 2017/127, the sandeel TAC was set provisionally at zero.
The proposal also seeks to make changes to take account of recent decisions by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) on yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna and skipjack tuna. Additionally, the proposal: - adds fishing opportunities for capelin in line with the EU-Greenland fisheries agreement; - sets a TAC for Chilean jack mackerel (30,150 tonnes for the EU); - increases the number of licences for EU fishing in the waters of the Faroe Islands and for Faroese vessels fishing in EU waters.
