Individual sanctions extended for a year

15/03/2017 (Agence Europe)A source has informed EUROPE that on Wednesday 15 March, the Committee of Representatives to the EU (Coreper) reached an agreement on a 12-month extension for sanctions against individuals involved in the situation in Egypt. These sanctions involve the freezing of these individuals’ financial and economic assets if they have been found guilty of investing funds belonging to the Egyptian state over the period leading up to 22 March 2017. Although the initial list adopted for the first time in March 2011, included 19 names, including the former President Hosni Mubarak, two people have been withdrawn from this list during the review of the restrictive measures. The source contacted by EUROPE has not clarified whether Mr Mubarak was one of individuals withdrawn from the list or the reasons for these withdrawals. The extension of the sanctions could possibly be made official during the Ecofin Council on Tuesday 21 March. (CG)
