06/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – The European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a press release on Friday 3 February that during a phone conversation the same day, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini and Russia's Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed “to meet in the coming weeks”. According to the EEAS, Mogherini and Lavrov also spoke at length about the escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine, and Mogherini underlined “the need to stop fighting immediately, and to work for a full implementation of the Minsk agreements” (see other article). They also discussed the political situation in Libya and Syria. With regard to Syria, they discussed the results of the Astana talks and the European initiative with the regional actors, as well as the next conference in Brussels on the Syria's future. (CG)
