Commission awards prizes to health research project and NGO campaigns

06/02/2017 (Agence Europe)At a ceremony at the University of Leuven on Monday 6 February, Research Commissioner Carlos Moedas presented the €1 million Horizon Prize for Better Use of Antibiotics to a joint research effort by P&M Venge AB of Sweden and Philips Electronics of the Netherlands. The project, developed by Minicare HNL, is for a finger-prick test that can diagnose in less than ten minutes a bacterial infection and identify if a patient can be treated safely without antibiotics. The test is expected to be available for use on patients by 2018. Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis handed over the health award for NGOs fighting antimicrobial resistance. The €20,000 first prize was awarded to BEUC, the European Consumer Organisation, the second prize of €15,000 was awarded to the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics and the third prize of €10,000 went to the World Alliance Against Antibiotic Resistance.
