06/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 6 February, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called on Romania to get its act together after the government, under pressure from mass protests, had to withdraw its controversial decrees. “I had a long discussion with the Romanian president in Malta”, Juncker said at a press briefing with French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. “I would like Romania to get its act together and I believe that it is doing so.” On Wednesday of last week, Juncker and Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans warned the Romanian government against backtracking on corruption. On Monday 6 February, Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas made clear that the removal before 2019 of the cooperation and verification mechanism (CVM) which has been in place for Romania since 2007 was entirely dependent on the reforms made being irreversible.
