EU congratulates Adama Jarrow, legitimate new president of Gambia, and urges Jammeh to stand down

Adama Barrow, the new president of Gambia, had to be inaugurated on Thursday 19 January at Gambia’s embassy in Senegal because Yahya Jammeh, in power for 22 years, is refusing to stand down.  On Thursday evening, after his inauguration, Barrow received a telephone call of congratulations from EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini as Senegalese troops entered Gambia as instructed by ECOWAS.
