18/01/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 18 January, European Council President Donald Tusk told MEPs that the issue of Libya and the central Mediterranean will be the key point at the informal summit in Malta on 3 February. This comes at a time when Italy noted a record number of migrant arrivals in 2016. "Last year, 180,000 migrants arrived irregularly in Italy. It's a situation that can't go on. That's why Libya and our approach to the central Mediterranean route will be the key point at the next informal summit in Malta", Tusk said. The EU supports the "government of national unity and its efforts to consolidate peace and stability in Libya. We are ready to step up the EU's engagement to strengthen the capacity of dealing with security questions and consolidating institutions", Tusk added. (SP)
