European cyber security agency public consultation

Should the European Network Information Security Agency (ENISA), which helps counter cyber-attacks, be modernised? This is the thrust of the question posed by the European Commission in a public consultation launched on 18 January.

It should be pointed out that ENISA was set up in 2004 for an initial period of five years. Since then, its mandate has been renewed twice and it currently applies for the 2013-20 period by way of European regulation 526/203.

The public consultation is open until 12 April and seeks to evaluate the performances accomplished by the agency over the 2013-16 period and examine its ability to respond to future cyber-attacks.

Before welcoming last year’s adoption of the NIS directive and launch of a public-private partnership worth €1.8 billion for developing cyber security, Vice President Andrus Ansip stated, “The ENISA review will help us to tackle the main security problems in the digital community at a time when cyber-attacks are increasing in terms of volume and are becoming more sophisticated”. He also emphasised that the Commission, whose own site, Europa, was recently the victim of a cyber-attack itself, was looking at other possible ways of taking action to strengthen cyber security in Europe as part of the midterm review for the single digital market strategy planned for the end of Spring 2017.
