05/12/2016 (Agence Europe) – A maximum dosage of 50 mg/litre is being proposed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to ensure safe use of dry grape extract as a flavouring in water for drinking for all categories and species of animal except dogs. Dry grape extract is a mixture of two extracts from the seed and skin of "Vitis vinifera subsp.vinifera". The EFSA panel on additives and products or substances used in animal feed (FEEDAP), which assesses the safety and/or efficacy of these substances for the target species, the user, the consumer of products of animal origin and the environment, published its scientific opinion on Friday 2 December. Given that the major component of the additive, the proanthocyanidin-rich seed extract, is recognised to provide flavour in food and its function in water for drinking for animals would be essentially the same, EFSA decided that no demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary.
