04/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 4 November, the European Commission approved a major project worth €39.2 million for improving railway links between Budapest and Békéscsaba, in southern Hungary, along the Rhine-Danube corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). This funding will be taken from Cohesion Funds, which are used to help member states whose gross national income (GNI) is less than 90% of the Community average in areas such as transport and the environment. European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu welcomed implementation of this project which, she said, testifies to the European Commission’s commitment to promoting sustainable transport systems and facilitating interregional links. This project will stimulate the competitiveness of this Hungarian region, particularly in the areas of industry and tourism. (TR)
