Spain ordered to comply fully with third legislative package on single market

29/09/2016 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 29 September, the Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Spain, calling on Madrid to ensure the full implementation of the two directives of the third legislative package for the liberalisation of the single energy market, Directive 2009/72/EC 'Electricity' and Directive 2009/73/EC, 'Gas'. The Commission found that the Spanish legislation in force prevented businesses other than incumbent network operators in the electricity and gas sectors from building and operating interconnectors to the other member states. It also believes that Madrid has incorrectly transposed several rules on the independence of the national regulatory authority. Spain now has two months to remedy the situation, or could be brought before the Court of Justice of the EU.  (EH)
