29/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – Contrary to what was written in EUROPE 11634, the European Commission thinks it will be possible to relocate 30,000 asylum-seekers from Greece to other member states by the end of 2017 – not 2016 as reported in error. The Commission believes, based on estimates from the Greek authorities, that 24,000 people (fewer than 30,000) of the 66,000 planned to relieve Greece, are currently eligible for relocation. The Commission regularly reviews the eligibility criteria and nationalities that can benefit from the measure. The overarching objective in September 2015 was relocation of 160,000 people, but a reserve of 54,000 has since been set up for Syrian refugees in Turkey, a question that the European Parliament recently challenged (but in a non-binding opinion). The objective has therefore been reduced to 106,000. (SP)
