Consultation on possible EU eco-label

Brussels, 12/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has launched a public consultation, to run from 8 May to 31 July 2015, on the feasibility of creating an eco-label at European Union level for fishery and aquaculture products.

Regulation 1379/2013 on a common market organisation for fisheries and aquaculture products (article 36) commits the Commission to submitting in order a feasibility report, following a consultation of the member states and stakeholders, on options for an eco-label for fishery and aquaculture products, by 1 January 2015, notably on establishing such a scheme at Union level and on setting minimum requirements for the use by member states of a Union eco-label.

The Commission requires contributions from the stakeholders to submit this report (which will, therefore, be a little behind schedule: Ed).

Regulation 1379/2013 lays down the obligatory information to be provided to consumers on the products they buy: the commercial designation of the species and its scientific name, the production method (caught or farmed), the area where the product was caught or farmed and the category of fishing gear used, whether the product has been frozen and its date of minimum durability, where appropriate.
