Brussels, 12/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - Some far-fetched health claims used to sell the supposed health benefits of certain foods for consumers will soon be banned in the EU under the terms of the regulation on nutritional and health claims in food (Regulation 1924/2006).
On Monday 11 May, the Council of the EU decided, without debate, not to oppose the adoption of two European Commission regulations in this connection. The following will be affected:
- a regulation will refuse to authorise certain health claims except those referring to the risks of disease and development and child health.
- a regulation will refuse to authorise certain claims that refer to reduced risk of disease.
The Council of the EU has given its assent and the Commission will be able to adopt these two texts, unless the Parliament objects. (Aminata Niang)
