EU mandate for Commission to negotiate international HFC management

Brussels, 12/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 11 May, the European Commission received a mandate to negotiate on behalf of the EU at the international negotiations planned for 2015 and 2016 on Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) management.

During the Agriculture Council meeting, the Council of the EU adopted without debate, the decision authorising the European Commission to negotiate on behalf of the EU, the amendments to the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer and the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

The parties to these two international instruments are committed to consolidating the feasibility study and modalities planned for appropriate HFC management over the next few months, which are not substances that deplete the ozone layer and whose production and consumption require reduction, given their high potential to create global warming. India recently proposed to amend the Montreal Protocol for scrapping HFC. (Aminata Niang)
