Brussels, 11/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - Media sources in the Netherlands have announced that on Wednesday, 11 March, a Dutch court annulled a draft law on telecommunication data retention that allowed operators to supply the police with telephone data from users in the event of police investigations and the fight against terrorism.
The Court in The Hague ruled that this law breached fundamental rights, particularly those relating to respect for private life. It is therefore respecting the decision made by the European Court of Justice in April 2014, which invalidated the 2006 European directive on telecommunications data retention but which had not prevented the government in The Hague from putting forward a text on the subject (see EUROPE 11056).
The different charities behind this legal approach criticised the fact that too few changes had been made to the proposal. (Solenn Paulic)
