Brussels, 11/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 11 March, the European Parliament called for reforms to be continued, while hailing Montenegro's progress in the EU accession negotiations.
In adopting the report by Charles Tannock (ECR, UK), the MEPs encourage the continuation of accession negotiations on the basis of the reforms implemented and concrete results, “especially in the areas of the rule of law, the media environment and the fight against corruption”. They state that the reforms linked to the rule of law are at the centre of the integration process.
“The political resolve remains determining in accomplishing important sustainable progress in the fight against corruption and organised crime, the main indicator of the independence, effectiveness and professionalism of the judicial system”, the MEPs state. They also highlight the need for progress in the reform of public administration, the freedom of expression and of the media, and sustainable economic reforms.
In addition, the Parliament underlined its concern about Montenegro's deep polarisation, which has translated into a partial boycott of the main opposition party. The MEPs call “urgently on all political forces to focus on the country's EU accession process and to establish a sustainable dialogue and constructive cooperation” (our translation throughout).
