Brussels, 06/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - The fight against terrorism and the 'special committee' set up after the LuxLeaks affair will be the focus of MEPs' attention at the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg on 9-12 February.
There is uncertainty about the setting up of a special committee on tax rulings in the wake of the LuxLeaks scandal. At the opening of the plenary sesson on Monday 9 February, the MEPs will decide whether to put a vote (without a prior debate) on the agenda for Thursday 12 February on the question of whether to set up a special committee.
Anti-terrorism will be another key topic, with a vote on a resolution in this connection on Thursday. The resolution has been tabled by all the EP's political groups in the form of a series of measures recommended by the MEPs, such as the controversial idea of setting up a European air passenger database (PNR). The question of PNR has been in deadlock at the EP since 2013 and this vote would give an indication of MEPs' sentiment against the backdrop of increasing pressure from the Council for a register to be set up as soon as possible. On Wednesday 11 February, a debate will take place on preparations for the European Summit of 12 February on terrorism, Greece, the economy and Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine will be discussed in the presence of the High Representative on Tuesday 10 February. On 11 February, the MEPs will discuss the idea of setting up a mechanism to ensure the respect of fundamental rights by EU member states.
On Wednesday, MEPs will call for the labelling of meat used as an ingredient in processed food, such as lasagna, to be covered by country of origin rules similar to those for fresh beef. (MD)
