Brussels, 06/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 5 February, the European Commission announced that €3 million in emergency aid is to be released for the victims of the severe floods caused by torrential rain in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar.
The funding is to be taken from the ECHO budget (the Commission's humanitarian aid and civil protection service) and will enable the most critical needs of the affected populations to be covered (shelter, food, drinking water, health care, hygiene equipment, and mosquito nets). It will also help the prevention of diseases in areas with stagnant water, and will help people recover their livelihoods.
Over 1 million people are affected by the floods, which have claimed around 300 lives and resulted in the displacement of 300,000 people. (AN)
