Brussels, 06/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - The new European Commission proposal on the circular economy, expected before the end of the year, will be ambitious and will deal with both sustainable consumption and sustainable production, Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella stated on Thursday 5 February. He said that it was so as not to waste time working separately on the two chapters that the Commission had decided to withdraw the package on the table and bring forward another.
He was addressing the European press at the presentation of the Commission position on the global partnership for sustainable development after 2015 (see EUROPE 11247).
The United Nations' objective number 12 is to ensure sustainable production and sustainable patterns of consumption, he said. “That is what we want with our new proposal. The commitment by the Commission is clear. Our proposals will be more ambitious. We want to bring the two planks together to avoid having to work on the production chapter later because the timetable is tight”, the commissioner said (our translation). (AN)
