Riga, 08/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 7 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini appointed Alain Le Roy as the new secretary general of the European External Action Service (EEAS). He will take up his post on 1 March 2015, succeeding Pierre Vimont from France, who has been in the post since 2010. In preparation for his new post, Le Roy will start working at the EEAS as special adviser to the high representative from mid-January.
A senior French diplomat, Le Roy has also served as EU special representative in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and as United Nations under secretary general for peacekeeping operations. “The diplomatic experience of Alain Le Roy will be instrumental to steer the EEAS and contribute to build an effective and solid European external policy. Today's challenges are immense and I am confident Alain Le Roy will make an invaluable contribution to that as the new secretary general of the EEAS”, Mogherini stated in a press release. (CG)
