Brussels, 24/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - Industry is pleased that at the talks at the European Summit on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 October, European heads of state decided to introduce safguards into the climate targets for 2030 enshrined on Thursday night.
The European steel industry admits that meeting the EU target of at least a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions on the 1990 level by 2030 will be a challenge because similar rules do not bind their global competitors. The EUROFER association is pleased that Europe's leaders introduced special clauses for the greenest plants (10% free allocations for the cleanest plants).
The car industry has also resigned itself to adjusting to the new European targets because it “appreciates that policy-makers have chosen to emphasise cost-effectiveness in achieving its overall target.” The European car manfacturers' association, ACEA, “stresses the need to balance environmental sustainability with competitiveness” and is pleased that technological neutrality has been introduced for CO2 emission reductions in the transport sector.
