GMO - eight varieties awaiting authorisation, Copa regrets

Brussels, 24/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European agricultural organisations Copa-Cogeca (producers and cooperatives), COCERAL (trade in cereals), FEDIOL (protein meal industries), FEFAC (animal feed), UECBV (livestock trade) and AVEC (poultry trade) still live in hope that the European Commission will soon rubber stamp eight varieties of GMO still awaiting authorisation to be sold on the European market (for import and processing, for the purposes of food for human consumption and animal feed). With the subject left off the agenda of the meeting of the College of Commissioners on 15 October, the organisation is once again urging the Barroso Commission not to postpone these authorisations. However, appearances would indicate that the dossier will end up in the hands of the new European Commission, the president of which, Jean-Claude Juncker - who is less in favour of GMO than his predecessor, José Manuel Barroso - plans to review the procedure for authorising the placing on the market of new genetically-modified varieties. The eight varieties concerned (MON 87460 and T25 maize, GT 73 rape seed, 305423, MON 87708, MON 87705 and BPS-CV127-9 soya and T304-40 cotton) have been granted the approval of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The agricultural organisations argue that if the EU fails to authorise these eight GMOs, EU supplies of food and animal feed could be under threat. (LC)
