EUROPEAN COUNCIL / (ae) commission

Juncker Commission officially approved

Brussels, 24/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 23 October, the European Council officially approved the new European Commission presided over by Jean-Claude Juncker. The Council procedure requires approval to be obtained by a qualified majority vote. The European Parliament had earlier given its approval to the future team the day before, backing it by 423 votes in favour, 209 against and 67 abstentions. The new Commission will enter into office on 1 November and continue until 31 October 2019. In line with the calls of the European Parliament, several portfolios have been adapted - in particular that of Tibor Navracsics from Hungary, who is now in charge of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, and that of Elzbieta Bienkowska, who has been appointed Internal Market, and who also picks up Space Policy. In addition to Migration and Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos from Greece will also be in charge of Citizenship (which was initially allocated to Navracsics). (SP)
