Brussels, 12/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is preparing its first European Sports Week to promote exercise and sport at all levels in the European Union. European Commissioner for Sport Androulla Vassiliou emphasised in a statement delivered at the preparatory conference on Wednesday 11 June how important it is to make sport of central part of daily life. Vassiliou noted, however, that, “according to recent surveys on sport and physical activity, there is unfortunately little or even no improvement in participation levels”.
She pointed out that European Sport Week's goal would be “to promote physical activity and participation in sport at all levels”. The Commission will provide funding for this event, which will take place in September 2015, from the new Erasmus+ programme. During European Sport Week, the Commission will coordinate events and activities throughout Europe, as well as guide signatory organisations towards their goals and encourage national awareness campaigns.
