UNIFE welcomes technical agreement on rail

Brussels, 06/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The rail industry is pleased with the technical pillar to the fourth rail package on which agreement was reached at the Transport Council on 5 June. Rail body UNIFE wants talks to start now with the European Parliament and to be concluded as soon as possible under the Italian Presidency so that a common position can be drawn up in the second half of the year. UNIFE Director General Philippe Citroen says the legislation could lead to major savings for industry and considerable improvements for rail transport across Europe. UNIFE points out that the current system of certification for rolling stock is a serious obstacle because it is so cumbersome and time-consuming with duplicate tests and red tape. The association wants the European Rail Agency to be given responsibility in the near future for certifying rolling stock that is used in more than one country. (MD)
