Brussels, 06/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 5 June, the European Union strongly condemned the murder of Michael Greub which took place the previous day in Sirte. Greub was working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The EU has urged the Libyan authorities to investigate this crime fully and bring the perpetrators to justice. “Michael Greub was engaged in vital work in Libya to alleviate suffering, and to protect and defend human rights”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
Greub, a 42-year old Swiss national who was head of the ICRC sub-delegaton in Misrata, was killed by armed men targeting his vehicle. Two other members of staff were present at the incident but were not wounded. The ICRC has been in Libya permanently since 2011. (CG)
