Brussels, 06/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Conservative (ECR) group at the European Parliament has announced that Sajjad Karim of the United Kingdom is its candidate to become president of the EP.
The North West MEP was the first British Muslim to be elected to the Parliament in 2004 and was re-elected for a third consecutive term last month. He was originally a member of the ALDE political group, later joining the Conservatives in 2007 where he belonged to the EPP and now the ECR. He has chaired the inter-parliamentary work on a free-trade deal with India and was vice-chair of the Fight against Racism and for the Respect of Diversity Intergroup. Karim supports scrapping the EP's headquarters in Strasbourg, slashing red tape and giving national parliaments' greater powers. (MB)
