12/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - Iceland postpones withdrawal of its EU candidacy. On Monday 12 May, the Icelandic government announced that it had postponed until the autumn its controversial project to withdraw the country's application for membership of the European Union. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, told the daily newspaper Morgunbladid that the members of its parliament had agreed to resume the debate after the summer break. The pro-EU MPs, who are in a minority, have done all in their power to block the rapid adoption of a resolution authorising the Eurosceptic government to bury the application made by the previous government in 2010. Most Icelandic citizens are calling for a referendum, as initially promised by the coalition between the Progress Party (centre) and the Independence Party (right wing). In March, the EU said that it was entirely possible for Iceland to shelve its accession negotiations for a while. (LC)
