Brussels, 12/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - In an interview of 11 May, Alexis Tsipras, the Greek leader of the Left party, Syriza, and the European Left Party's candidate to succeed José Manuel Barroso as European Commission president, called on Europeans to turn out and vote on 25 May and “not to let others vote for them” in order “undo the austerity and policy of Angela Merkel” and to shift the balance of forces in Europe. “We are at a turning point”, said the young 39-year-old leader. “It's either austerity (…) with Angela Merkel and less democracy” “or the Left” which will restore “growth, decent work and social justice”. Tsipras wants 2014 to be “the year of change”. Believing that it is “urgent to reverse neoliberalism and German Europe”, Tspiras says that the candidates from the two biggest political families - Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker - will just perpetuate the same logic. “They are politically complementary” and “are part of the same neoliberal consensus”, he states.
