Brussels, 12/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 12 May, the European Commission launched a new alert mechanism for EU citizens, to inform them of certain initiatives that the Commission is taking. In order to increase its efforts at transparency and citizen-participation in EU work, the Commission is planning a mail alert mechanism that provides information on new roadmaps and public consultations proposed by the Commission in all domains of EU action (https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/notifications/homePage.do?locale=en #en).
“Today the European Union's activities affect millions of European citizens' lives. Interaction between the European institutions and citizens is a necessary prerequisite for a culture of democracy, and the European institutions' decisions must be taken as openly as possible”, the Commission states on its website. The Commission believes that citizens must have the possibility of being informed on a regular basis about the planning and preparation of new EU initiatives. The Commission at Work - Notifications will allow everybody interested in EU policy-making to receive information. They will thus be better informed and prepared to follow the EU decision-making process and to take part in it, says the Commission. (LC)
