12/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - Dijsselbloem says preventative aid cannot be requested after the end of an aid programme. The head of Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, said in an interview with the Expresso magazine that a eurozone nation that has already exited from a financial aid programme without requesting preventative aid from the European Stability Mechanism (like Ireland and Portugal) will not be allowed to request such aid at a later date if things do not go according to plan. He said that a precautionary credit line is requested in advance by definition and if it is requested when things go wrong, then it would not be precautionary aid but a normal bailout. His statement contradicts comments made at a meeting of Council of the EU experts recently. (MB)
