Brussels, 27/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - Although EU-Jordan cooperation has been maintained and the country continued to carry out reforms in 2013, despite the impact of the Syrian crisis, Jordan must continue the process of reforms and apply the laws it has adopted, the European Commission states in its progress report on the country, which was published on Thursday 27 March.
According to the Commission, Jordan must continue “building a more consensual, participatory and open political system”, which will require changes to the legal framework for elections. It must strengthen the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and its administrative capacity, added the Commission, stating that, in 2013, “no progress can be reported in enhancing the effectiveness and independence of the judiciary”. The country needs to take legislative and regulatory measures to improve the business and investment climate, continue with tax reforms and the modernisation of public finance control institutions, in line with the fight against corruption, “a serious cause for concern” for the EU.
Speaking out against infringements against the freedom of expression and the media, the Commission called for progress, particularly on changes to the criminal code. Efforts are also needed to ensure the freedom of association. (CG)
