Workshop on control of bluefin tuna fishery in Mediterranean

Brussels, 27/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 25 and 26 March in Vigo, Spain, the European Fisheries Control Agency held a workshop on monitoring and control of the eastern bluefin tuna fishery in the waters of ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna). This event was attended by representatives of EU countries which fish for this species in the Mediterranean as well as representatives of other ICCAT contracting parties, such as Egypt, Algeria, Algeria and Turkey.

At the annual meeting of ICCAT (in Cape Town in November 2013), it was decided that the European Union would hold a technical workshop on control measures in the bluefin fishery. The European Fisheries Control Agency was responsible for arranging the workshop (having previously arranged a similar workshop).

The workshop focused on specific measures laid down in the recovery plan for bluefin tuna and procedures both at sea and in farms. Attendees of this workshop discussed control of transfer operations (of bluefin tuna) and caging operations both at sea and on farms. In particular, they discussed the use of stereoscopic cameras (or alternative systems) to define the precise number and weight of the fish. (LC)
