Facebook, Google and Twitter sued in France

Brussels, 25/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - The French consumer association UFC-Que Choisir has brought Twitter, Google and Facebook before the Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris over clauses in their general terms of use which the association believes are abusive, possibly even illegal, the French media reported on 25 March. The association wants to “show that the contracts of these three companies do not comply with French law”. This case, the first of its kind in France and in Europe, according to the association, is justified by the fact that the terms of use are “illegible and inaccessible” to French citizens, as they refer users to a multitude of links exclusively in English. UFC-Que Choisir also criticises the three giants' use of the personal data of its users. Facebook, Google+ and Twitter “authorise themselves to collect, modify and keep the data of their users”, which can be used for commercial purposes without the agreement of these users and without “a procedure of acceptance for the contract for use of the service”, the association says.
