Head of delegation says Egypt not thirsting for reconcilation

Brussels, 19/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 18 March, the head of the EU Delegation in Egypt, James Moran, said that, in his opinion, there is no desire in Egypt for reconciliation. He regretted that for the moment the country is not really thirsting for reconciliation, but stated that some politicians have underlined that it would be necessary to return to such a process. The presidential and parliamentary elections will take place next month. Moran added that the political process must be open to all who respect democratic principles.

Moran stated that there are real reasons to be concerned about the security of the country, and that there is real turbulence. He spoke of the bomb attacks in Sinai and the bomb attacks on tourist buses last month that left several dead. He stated that millions of people depend on tourism and there is a concern about a fall in tourist numbers. Tourism accounts for 9 million jobs, and is the second most important sector in the country after agriculture. Moran nevertheless mentioned some encouraging signs for the economy, with the current government's resolve for reform and the desire to improve the climate for industry, investment and trade.

While there are concerns about human rights, the situation of the Christians has improved at the start of 2014 after a difficult 2013, Moran added, saying that there are reasons to be optimistic.

Returning to the constitution adopted by referendum on 14-15 January (see EUROPE 11000), Moran conceded that, while this includes several problems, it is promising as regards human rights. It is up to the political forces to implement it, Moran warned, waiting to see how it will be transposed. (CG)
