Brussels, 19/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - Based on a scientific study by Emisia (the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), the European Biodiesel Bureau (EBB) and the European Oilseed Alliance (EOA) are calling on the European Council to include specific obligatory objectives for the transport sector in the energy/climate package 2030. The study confirms that, without objectives of this kind, and with the end of the renewables and fuel quality directives in 2020, CO2 emissions in the transport sector would be “out of control”, accounting for 45% of all EU emissions in 2050, compared to 28% in 2010, the organisations warn. Under this scenario, efforts to reduce emissions from the transport sector would be entirely dependent on the improved efficiency of engines and on electric vehicles, any massive upturn in which appears to be utopic in the short and medium terms. Additionally, all other economic sectors of the EU, and most specifically those which do not come under the ETS, would have to pay for out-of-control emissions in the transport sector. (EH)
