Two member states taken to Court on waste management

Brussels, 23/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - Bulgaria and Slovenia, which continue in their non-respect of EU legislation on waste management despite several calls to order, are to be taken to the Court of Justice of the EU. This was decided by the European Commission on Thursday 23 January.

The Commission criticises Bulgaria for continuing to use 113 landfill sites which should have been closed by 16 July 2009 at the latest, in line with the deadline laid down in Directive 99/31/EC on landfill. The appeal lodged with the Court aims to accelerate the closure and clean up of illegal landfill sites which represent a serious risk to human health and the environment.

With regard to Slovenia, the Commission's concern is over two illegal landfill sites containing dangerous waste - one situated close to the centre of Celje, and the other close to Bukovzlak - which infringe the waste framework directive and Directive 99/31/EC. (AN/transl.fl)
