Decisive progress on police

Brussels, 06/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - At the end of another dialogue meeting on 5 December with the prime ministers of Serbia and Kosovo, Ivica Dacic and Hashim Thaçi respectively, about implementing the 19 April agreement, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton spoke of “decisive progress on police and other issues”. An agreement was reportedly concluded on the participation of Serbian representatives in the police in the north of Kosovo. According to Dacic, the structure of police employees will reflect the ethnic structure of the population in the municipalities. He added that the process for applying for a job in the police should begin in the coming days.

Ashton described the trilateral three-hour meeting as “constructive”. She had first met Thaçi and then Dacic. The meeting apparently focused on the police, justice and the formation of associations of municipalities in the north of Kosovo.

Another meeting on 13 December. “We have agreed to continue our discussions next week, on 13 December”, Ashton stated in her press release. Dacic said that this new round of the dialogue would mainly focus on the judiciary and the issue of setting up law courts - including the unsettled issue of the court in north Mitrovica.

Ashton noted that, “on the basis of the progress achieved”, she would present a new report on the dialogue to the General Affairs Council on 17 December. During this Council, the date could be decided for the intergovernmental conference for the official opening of Serbia's accessions negotiations. (CG/transl.fl)
